Charlie trained as an architect, spent 20 years in Hulme where he was a founder member and part designer of the award winning Homes and Work for Change Co-operatives and wrote the council’s Guide to Development. He established a sustainable design and fabrication co-op producing furniture, nightclubs, housing & neighbourhoods; work he added to with Urbed creating masterplans, housing design, building re-use work, community controlled housing models and energy strategies.
More recently he has developed 2050 ready retrofit standards, delivery vehicles, financial models, and the GM Domestic Retrofit Strategy. He has retrofitted 19 houses, 3 of the top 4 of the 2011 Retrofit for the Future project. He has developed a Retrofit Pattern Book through RED, a design and delivery co-op specialising in sustainable re-use of buildings/neighbourhoods.
