Young people enter Centenary Square Design Competition

MADE is facilitating a special City Builder, young people led entry into the international design competition for Centenary Square recently launched by Birmingham City Council

This is a major international competition with a vey high profile  We want to involve young people in this 'once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of shaping Birmingham's future’

MADE’s work with young people is focused on making sure that talented young people in the West Midlands have access to the built environment professions whatever their backgrounds. Our City Builders programme helps 15-18 year olds to gain experience of design in the built environment and interact with people from all the professions.  We hold academies, run a mentoring scheme and go on expeditions to explore the built environment and the careers it offers. For more information about our education work see here.

In a special City Builder session we are recruiting young people from across the region to take part this major design competition. We will be running a number of workshop sessions during November. The deadline for competition entries is 2nd December 2014. The workshops will be supported by MADE staff and volunteer professionals who will work with the young people to create a competition entry which reflects their vision of the square.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for young people to work in a collaborative team on a real-life design challenge.

We are calling for:

1. Young people aged 14-18 who can share their ideas and help us design a new square

2. Professionals who can help facilitate this and help turn these ideas in to a competition entry.  All built environment backgrounds are welcome but we are particular keen to hear from those with landscape/public realm experience.

How to get involved

We are holding a design workshop, on Sunday 16th November 2014 at MADE offices in Birmingham. This will include a site visit to Centenary Square. For more info about this event see here

This will then be followed up with a second after school workshop on Wednesday 19th November 16.00-18.00 at MADE offices in Birmingham. For more info about this event see here

The volunteer professionals and MADE staff will attend these sessions and then work up the ideas into a submission for the competition (the deadline is December 2nd 2014)
