M5 Mile Virtual Exhibition

Author: Pooja Raj

In June 2016 6 local artists were commissioned by MADE to transform a neglected stretch of land under the raised section of the M5 motorway as it passes through Smethwick. Their brief, to simply respond to the site.

Artists Fusion Dance Company, Daniel Griffin-Hayes, Bryan Hancox, Jayne Murray, Nita Newman and Samuel Rodgers took over the space for just one day through dance, installation, street art, animation, sound and more. The event created a circus of creativity amongst the giant pillars of the M5 Motorway.

The M5 Mile was documented through photography and film so that those who did not pass by on the day can see what took place. To compliment the exhibition which took place at MADE in October 2016 we have created a virtual gallery where you can see images by Ian Stenson, You can see the online exhibitionhere.

The M5 Mile Concept was developed by MADE with help from Infamous Community Arts and Blue and White Creative. It was funded by Creative Black County and supported by Highways England.
