Built environment professionals wanted to talk to young people

Do you love your job? why? can you share this passion with a young person? can you inspire more young people to pursue a career in the built environment?

MADE is looking for professionals who can give a short presentation about their work and career to a group of 15-18 years olds at our City Builder Academies this July. Timings and dates can be arranged to suit you.

MADE’s City Builder Academy is a free 5-day experience for 15-18 year-olds interested in architecture, planning, landscape architecture, engineering, urban design, building services, ecology and other built environment careers.

City Builder Academy aims to make sure that talented young people in the West Midlands have access to the built environment professions whatever their backgrounds.

What we do at an academy

During the academy we split the academy (25 participants  max) into small groups who will undertake a design challenge over the 5 days. This will involve a site visit, analysis, developing proposals, crits, working up into detailed designs, presenting the scheme through scaled plans, elevations, sections, mood boards, sketches, models etc. We also visit some practices to see what day to day life is life and also a building to understand the multidisciplinary nature of development and be inspired by some great places.  Alongside this we ask various professionals to visit the academy over the course of the week and talk to the young people.  The aim is to give them first hand access to hearing about careers they are interested in – and some they may not even have heard of before.

Which professions?

Professions include: architecture, landscape architecture, planning, transport planning, building services, urban design, engineering through to ecologists and artists working in the built environment.

The professional presentations

The aim of the presentation is to inspire the next generation – your presentation should aim to cover

•What the profession is

•Where you may work

•What kind of things you may work on

•Who you work with

•How you access the profession  - career routes, typical pathways.

•A typical day

•Good bits

•Not so good bits

•Various specialisms/career routes

•Top tips for those interested

How you do this is up to you, we will have a computer for PowerPoint video etc etc, or just come and have a chat with them, it all depends on your style.

Dates and timings

We are holding two academies this year - 4-8 July and 18-22 July.  We are interesting in hearing from professionals who can do one or both of these weeks. The talks are usually in the first half  of the week,

The talk will be just half an hour and then we invite you to stay to a short while to talk to the young people about their design project if you can. We also invite the professional speakers to come back on the last day and be part of the judging panel if they are available – but this is not compulsory!
